🇻🇪OIL INSTEAD OF WAR: A NEW CHAPTER FOR VENEZUELA?
The United States and Venezuela have announced a major oil deal. Washington is gaining control over the development of fields containing more than 65 billion barrels of oil, while American businesses have pledged to invest tens of billions of dollars in restoring the country’s oil industry.
For Venezuela, exhausted by years of confrontation, this could be a chance for investment, jobs and a return to normal economic life.
But there is also serious criticism. Some Chavists and Venezuelan leftists fear that, under the guise of cooperation, the country is effectively handing control over its main national wealth—oil—to a foreign state and transnational corporations.
That is why the main question now is not only how much oil the United States will receive, but also how much ordinary Venezuelan people will gain from this deal.
One can only hope that after many years of sanctions, conflicts and threats, relations between the United States and Venezuela will finally be built on peace and mutual benefit.
May Venezuelan oil become a source of schools, hospitals, jobs, roads and prosperity for millions of people—not merely a source of superprofits for transnational corporations.
