🇨🇴🔥 COLOMBIA CLOSES THE CHAPTER OF «TOTAL PEACE»
Colombia’s new president, Abelardo de la Espriella, has announced the de facto end of the «Total Peace» policy pursued by the previous president, Gustavo Petro, who was involved in the revolutionary movement in his youth.
Instead of lengthy negotiations with armed groups, the new government is betting on the power of the state, arrests, extraditions and military operations.
26 In August, the president authorized the extradition to the United States of five former participants in the peace processes and stated that negotiations should no longer become a way to evade justice. On August 27, Colombian forces carried out an airstrike on a camp belonging to a group linked to a dissident commander known by the alias Calarca, the leader of the faction FARC, that did not recognize the 2016 peace agreement, known as the
Estado Mayor de Bloques y Frentes (EMBF) — «General Staff of Blocks and Fronts».
Colombia is simultaneously strengthening cooperation with the United States in combating drug trafficking and organized crime.
Will it be possible to restore security through military force—or will the new course lead to another escalation of the long-running internal conflict?
We will be watching.
