🇲🇽🤝🇫🇷 THE CODEX RETURNED HOME AFTER ALMOST TWO CENTURIES
An unusual event in cultural diplomacy took place in Mexico City. The Azcatitlan Codex, an ancient manuscript recounting the history of the Mexica people, returned to Mexico for the first time since 1840.
All this time, the document had been in France, and now the National Library of France has temporarily lent it to the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. The codex can be seen there at the “Mexico–France: 200 Years of Friendship” exhibition until December 6.
But the most interesting part is that the exchange turned out to be two-way. While the Azcatitlan Codex travels from Paris to Mexico City, Mexico is sending the Boturini Codex to France, which will be exhibited in Paris. The exchange is taking place as part of the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
🌎 It became a form of diplomacy in which what travels between countries are not politicians, but history and cultural memory. The exchange is to be followed by joint research, the digitization of collections, and exchanges of specialists.
Sometimes a single old manuscript can tell us more about relations between two countries than a dozen official statements.
